LIBERATION LOVE STORY:
1) TELL US YOUR LIBERATED LOVE STORY. WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN? AND WHAT IS YOUR REALITY NOW?
When I really think about it, I think my liberated love story began a little over 10 years ago…
I entered Tufts University in 2003 knowing exactly who I was and what I wanted to do – I was an athlete (a lacrosse player), and I was going to be a clinical psychologist. The following spring was the first of several knee injuries that led to 4 surgeries in less than 3 years, the loss of athletics, and a not-so-minor breakdown spiritual awakening. I transferred to UC Santa Cruz and graduated in 2007 having pretty much no idea who I was or what I wanted to do. So much for figuring all that out in college.
I spent the next six months working in retreat centers studying yoga and techniques for personal growth and transformation. I became fascinated with the mind-body connection as well as social activism. I returned home, enrolled in a Yoga Teacher Training program and started a yoga-based fundraising organization, Warriors for Peace. THAT lit me up. I also got a job working as a psychology research assistant since I thought now perhaps I DID, in fact, want to be a psychologist – I just wanted to study embodiment, not anxiety.
Nope. That wasn’t right either. I hated research. Too much data, not enough people. And again, I found myself not knowing what I wanted to do. So I decided to go on what I deemed a spiritual quest, and went to teach English and backpack in Southeast Asia. I wanted the sky to open up and a big booming voice to tell me what the hell to do with my life.
That didn’t happen. Shocker, I know. But despite the lack of some kind of other-worldly communication, I did get clear that even if I didn’t know exactly where the end point was, I could choose a direction to point my feet and take one step at a time. Even if I didn’t know everything, I did know some things. I knew I was passionate about Warriors for Peace, and wanted to do more with the entrepreneurship and the transformation of people and organizations.
Upon my return, I got a job as the 3rd employee for a newly-launched nonprofit organization called the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!). I spent the next three years teaching middle and high school students how to start and run their own real businesses while working intimately inside of a startup myself. When I started in 2010 we were running 11 programs in 2 states. When I left three years later, we had 14 employees and were running the program in 89 communities in 34 states. I ate, slept and breathed that job. But while I loved the work, I most certainly did not love my life.
Luckily for me, I ran into Craig Filek (former partner in the EWO Leadership Team) at a coffee shop in Rochester, NY, who then introduced me to Alexis Neely. Now THESE were the kinds of people and mentors I’d been looking for, and ones who were living a kind of life I could sense was possible, but I hadn’t really seen before.
So, ten months ago, I made the leap. I left my job at YEA! and started working with Alexis as a Law Business Success Coach with New Law Business Model, and went to visit Kiva Leatherman in New Hampshire for three days of brainstorming about entrepreneurial archetypes. It was all starting to come together. Not only was my lifestyle shifting (I can now work from anywhere, create my own schedule and be more particular about the projects I take on), I’ve also started my own business Embodied Action Coaching and I can honestly say that I love my work AND my life.
Sure there’s more I want to do and desires and goals I still have that haven’t been reached yet, but I sure am enjoying the process and the journey.
2) WHAT HAS BEEN THE KEY LIBERATION LOVE LESSON FOR YOU? WHAT KEY LEARNING MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO LIBERATE YOUR SELF AND STEP INTO YOUR LIBERATION LOVE STORY AND LIFE?
If you want to live an extraordinary life, the key is to know who you really, REALLY are. And that requires proactive, open and courageous exploration.
The way to happiness and fulfillment in both work and life is not to follow someone else’s path – it’s to look inside yourself and listen to your own deepest knowing. And if you can’t hear what that is, listen to and intimately feel body and your own direct experience – the key to everything is right there. Your relationship with yourself is the most important one you have.
3) WHAT’S THE TRANSFORMATIONAL QUESTION YOU WOULD ASK SOMEONE WHO IS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT A LIBERATED LIFE FOR THEMSELVES?
Where is the sweet spot where what you love, what you’re good at, and what the world needs comes together?
4) HOW HAS HAVING YOUR MONEY MAP NUMBERS ALLOWED YOU TO CREATE YOUR LIBERATION LOVE STORY & LIVE YOUR LIBERATED LIFE?
Knowing my Money Map Numbers helped me get clear on what I really, actually and truly needed to have the life I wanted. When I did it the first time, I realized that I wasn’t even making what I had identified as my ‘Minimum To Be Happy!’ That was a huge eye opener for me. So no wonder I was continually frustrated! I was tempted to find the first job I could or go wait tables, or just settle for not being as happy as I wanted. But I knew I wanted more than that. So with the clarity that I got from the Money Map to Freedom program, I started planning to meet goals in a different way. I started charging for my services based on my Money Map Hourly number, completely terrified no one would hire me. But guess what. They DID! I got a whole new sense of my value and the potential of what I could create. Really, when I think about it, it upleveled my whole life, not just my bank account…
